OSVgroup was engaged by Austinland to deliver the constructed waterway and surrounding parkland reserve at Austin, a growing residential community positioned 40 minutes west of Melbourne's CBD.
The waterway reserve was conceived as habitat for native flora and fauna, linked by a network of pathways and crossings, with linear parkways featuring fitness equipment and walking and cycling tracks for the wider community. OSVgroup's scope brought that vision to life, combining civil infrastructure, water-sensitive design and extensive revegetation to deliver a functional stormwater asset that doubles as a genuine community open space.
Scope of Works
OSVgroup delivered a full waterway and parkland package across the site, including:
- Rock beaching to waterway batters and edges
- In-situ concrete wall construction
- Drainage works and stormwater infrastructure
- Aquatic and tube stock planting throughout the wetland zones
- Advanced tree planting across the reserve
- Garden bed construction and native planting
- Instant turf establishment
- Fitness node construction with rubberised surfacing
- Bird netting installation to protect establishing aquatic plantings
Key Features
- A constructed wetland system providing stormwater treatment alongside genuine habitat value for local birdlife and aquatic species
- Fitness nodes positioned along the shared path network, with equipment overlooking the water
- Rock beaching delivering erosion protection while giving the waterway edges a natural, rugged character
- A pedestrian crossing linking both sides of the reserve and connecting the surrounding residential streets

- A diverse indigenous planting palette - including native grasses, groundcovers and flowering species - chosen to establish quickly and thrive with minimal intervention
- Bird netting protecting new aquatic plantings through the critical establishment phase
Lasting Impact
Austin Waterway demonstrates how essential drainage infrastructure can be delivered as genuine public open space. What functions as a stormwater treatment asset also gives residents a place to walk, exercise and connect with the natural environment on their doorstep.
As the plantings mature and the wetland establishes, the reserve will become an increasingly valuable ecological corridor, supporting native birdlife and aquatic species within a rapidly growing residential community.
