The Gorge Road Streetscape Upgrade was all about transforming a busy local shopping precinct into a safer, greener and more welcoming place for the community. Delivered for the City of Whittlesea, the project balanced functionality with amenity - improving pedestrian access, upgrading infrastructure and creating inviting spaces to shop, dine and connect.
Scope of Works
Our role was to deliver a full civil and landscape package, covering everything from roads and pavements to stormwater management, pedestrian crossings and public realm upgrades. With the precinct at the heart of daily community activity, careful planning and delivery ensured the upgrades were seamless, safe and built to last.
Key Features
- Road & Pavement Works: New asphalt surfaces, concrete paths, pram ramps, tactile indicators and smooth tie-ins to existing infrastructure.
- Drainage Upgrades: New stormwater pits, pipes, and agricultural drains to improve water management, with modifications to integrate with existing systems.
- Pedestrian Safety Enhancements: A raised zebra crossing at Reid Street and upgraded street lighting to improve access and visibility.
- Public Realm Upgrades: Expanded outdoor dining and trading areas featuring timber decking, café umbrellas, seating, bike racks and dining tables.
- Landscaping & Environmental Design: Sustainable garden beds with passive irrigation, plus new canopy trees and understory planting for shade, biodiversity and greenery.
- Finishing Touches: Updated signage, line marking, and adjustments to services, with protection of electrical assets.
Lasting Impact
A 26-week maintenance period is ensuring all new plantings establish successfully, supporting the project’s long-term sustainability. The revitalised streetscape now offers safer pedestrian connections, improved stormwater resilience, and vibrant outdoor spaces that encourage community activity and support local traders.
The Gorge Road upgrade is a clear example of how thoughtful urban design and civil works can enhance everyday community life.
